Regensburg
General information:
In a country known for its impressive thirst for beer, and in the state of Bavaria, where a fifth of the world's breweries mass produce "liquid bread,"
the city of Regensburg boasts over 400 bars. Though far from the pounding clubs of cities like Berlin, this small college town maintains a vibrant
night-life which seems to pulse throughout each day of the week.
Germans approach the act of imbibing differently than we base Americans do. . That's not to say they don't go nuts now and then. Still it is wise
to know about the different choices Germany has to offer. Besides regular lager beers, there are dunkels, which can be as black as coffee and, for the
really daring, extra dunkels has the consistency of maple syrup. The German equivalent of an American light beer is called helles and there is an
even lighter option called radller ( beer plus lemonade, forget about it). Pilsner ( check origin) and specially Weissbier (wheat beer) are common in Bavaria.
Among the different customs encountered in Germany, something that often surprises Americans is that strangers can sit beside you at a restaurant
and proceed to order and eat. If the customs of this foreign land seem strange, the best thing to remember is to chill out and remember that these are
the German ways and you are in Germany.
Should you choose to assume the social customs of your Bavarian peers, taking advantage of the 16 year old drinking age, make sure to note the
happy hours at each of the bars since this will save you heaps of D-Marks.
Be warned, Europe is scarce on ice cubes, so don't expect ice in your drink unless you specifically ask for some. Just say the drink you want "mit
Eis" (i.e. Gin und Tonic mit Eis).
If you want to party the Regensburg way, the authors of this article, whose expertise in alcoholic binges is surpassed by no one, list the best
night-life spots that Regensburg has to offer. Be young and have fun. Party on!
